League of Legends Ranks Explained
League of Legends has ten ranked tiers. From lowest to highest: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster and Challenger. The first seven split into four divisions each. The top three have none, and you climb them on LP alone. Your badge shows where you sit on the ladder, but matchmaking runs on a hidden number, your MMR.
LoL ranks in order
Ten tiers, Iron at the bottom and Challenger at the top. Iron to Diamond each have divisions IV, III, II and I. Master, Grandmaster and Challenger have no divisions.
| Tier | Divisions | What changes here |
|---|---|---|
| Iron | IV to I | The lowest tier |
| Bronze | IV to I | |
| Silver | IV to I | |
| Gold | IV to I | Where the middle of the ladder sits |
| Platinum | IV to I | |
| Emerald | IV to I | Sits between Platinum and Diamond |
| Diamond | IV to I | Tighter duo limits, LP decay when inactive |
| Master | None | LP only, duo limited to Diamond I and Master |
| Grandmaster | None | Capped per region, no duo |
| Challenger | None | Capped per region, no duo |

Divisions count down as you climb. Gold IV is the bottom of Gold and Gold I the top, so the step from Gold I to Platinum IV is a promotion even though the number goes from 1 to 4. If you drop a tier, Riot puts you in the highest division of the tier below: a player demoted from Gold IV lands in Silver I.
Solo/Duo and Flex use the same tiers but keep separate ranks. Being Gold in Solo/Duo and Platinum in Flex at the same time is normal.
How LP and divisions work
You win League Points (LP) for a victory and lose them for a defeat. Reach 100 LP and you move up a division, keeping whatever you went over. There are no promotion series any more. A Silver II player on 88 LP who wins 25 goes straight to Silver I on 13 LP.
Going down works in three ways.
- Inside a tier: lose more LP than you have and you drop a division straight away. Silver III on 5 LP who loses 20 becomes Silver IV on 85.
- Out of a tier: you land on 25, 50 or 75 LP in the division below, not on 0.
- Decay: from Diamond up, LP drains when you stop playing. Diamond loses 50 LP a day once your banked days run out. Master and above lose 75 LP a day, bank one day per game played and can hold 14 at most.
Riot sets out these rules on its placements, demotions and decay page (May 2026). How much LP each game is worth depends on your MMR, covered further down.
Master, Grandmaster and Challenger
Challenger is the highest rank in League of Legends. Master is open to anyone who reaches 100 LP in Diamond I. Grandmaster and Challenger need an LP floor and a free seat: you have to have more LP than the lowest player already in that tier.
| Tier | How you get in |
|---|---|
| Master | 100 LP in Diamond I |
| Grandmaster | 400 LP and more LP than the lowest Grandmaster |
| Challenger | 800 LP and more LP than the lowest Challenger |
Standings refresh on a rotating 24-hour cycle, so you can sit on 850 LP and still be Grandmaster if every Challenger seat belongs to someone with more. Riot fixes the number of seats per server.
| Server (Solo/Duo) | Grandmaster seats | Challenger seats |
|---|---|---|
| North America | 700 | 300 |
| Europe West | 700 | 300 |
| Korea | 700 | 300 |
| Southeast Asia | 700 | 300 |
| Brazil | 500 | 200 |
| Europe Nordic & East | 500 | 200 |
| Latin America North | 500 | 200 |
| Latin America South | 500 | 200 |
| Türkiye | 500 | 200 |
| Japan | 100 | 50 |
| Oceania | 100 | 50 |
| Russia | 100 | 50 |

There's no single world number one. Each server keeps its own ladder, and the top spot changes as LP moves.
LoL rank distribution: what rank is average?
Gold is the average rank. It's also the biggest single tier, at about 24% of ranked Solo/Duo players, with Silver close behind on 21%. Riot doesn't publish an official distribution, so the numbers below come from a third-party tracker that samples public matches.
| Tier | Share of ranked players | At this tier or higher |
|---|---|---|
| Iron | 3.4% | 100% |
| Bronze | 16% | 97% |
| Silver | 21% | 81% |
| Gold | 24% | 60% |
| Platinum | 18% | 36% |
| Emerald | 13% | 18% |
| Diamond | 4% | 4.9% |
| Master | 0.83% | 0.9% |
| Grandmaster | 0.054% | 0.08% |
| Challenger | 0.023% | 0.02% |

Reading the last column gives the answers people look for:
- The median player is in Gold. 60% are Gold or higher, 36% Platinum or higher.
- Top 10% starts inside Emerald.
- Top 5% is roughly Diamond IV.
- Top 3% sits in the upper Diamond divisions.
- Master and above is under 1% of the ladder.
These lines move. Early in the year many players stop after placements, which skews the sample, so check the date on any distribution you read.
Rank and MMR aren't the same thing
Your rank is what other players see. MMR, your matchmaking rating, is what the game uses to pick your opponents, and Riot keeps it hidden. The two usually travel together, but they drift apart after a losing run, a long break or the yearly reset. The gap decides your LP.
| Your MMR compared with your rank | What you see |
|---|---|
| Higher than your rank | Bigger gains, smaller losses. You climb quickly |
| About the same | Gains and losses roughly even |
| Lower than your rank | Small gains, big losses. The game pulls you down |
That's how two Gold II players can get 28 LP and 19 LP for the same win. The numbers are an example, not a Riot table, but the pattern holds. Flex and Solo/Duo keep separate MMR, so losing in Flex doesn't touch your Solo/Duo rating. We go through the mechanics in our guide on how MMR works in League.
Who you can duo with at each rank
Solo/Duo limits how far apart two players can be. Iron to Platinum is fairly loose, Emerald and Diamond are tight, Master is narrow, and Grandmaster and Challenger can't duo at all.
| Your rank | You can duo with |
|---|---|
| Iron | Iron to Silver |
| Bronze | Iron to Silver |
| Silver | Iron to Gold |
| Gold | Silver to Platinum |
| Platinum | Gold to Emerald |
| Emerald | Platinum to Diamond III |
| Diamond IV to II | Emerald II to Diamond II |
| Diamond I | Diamond III to Master (under 200 LP) |
| Master | Diamond I (under 200 LP) to Master (within 400 LP) |
| Grandmaster | No duo |
| Challenger | No duo |
Source: Riot Games Support, Solo/Duo queue, May 2026.
Three rules on the same page catch people out:
- From Emerald up to Diamond II, you can't queue with someone whose MMR is Master-tier while they show Diamond or lower. Their badge doesn't matter.
- Master players competing for Grandmaster are blocked from duo too.
- On the Korean server, players can't duo with Master or higher.
So can Diamond IV duo with Emerald IV? No. Diamond IV to II only queues with Emerald II and above. Our LoL duo queue guide works through the edge cases. Flex is looser: Riot sets no Flex rank limits for Diamond and below, and you can queue Flex as 1, 2, 3 or 5 players, but not 4.
Queueing with a friend who fits the table is ordinary ranked play. Paying someone to carry you is a different matter: in its September 2026 anti-boost update Riot said players who repeatedly party with boosters lose the rank they gained, even if they didn't know. If you're weighing a duo boost with a Challenger partner, read our duo boosting safety guide first. It has our own 2026 detection numbers.
How to start ranked and how placements work
You can play ranked once your account is level 30, owns at least 20 champions and has finished 10 normal games on Summoner's Rift. Then each ranked queue asks for five placement games before it shows your rank.
- A loss in placements costs 0 LP.
- Nobody places above Diamond III, even players who finished last year in Challenger.
- Your result depends on who you beat, your rank from last year and, for first-time ranked players, your Swiftplay and Normal Draft MMR.
The 2026 ranked year opened on 8 January with the yearly reset. Riot lowers visible ranks at that point but keeps part of your MMR, so returning players climb back faster than new ones. If the ranked button greys out mid-season, check Riot's service status page before assuming your account has a restriction.
Ranked pays out in cosmetics too: Riot's Skins 101 says 15 ranked wins earn the Victorious skin. Our guide to LoL skin tiers covers the rest of the ladder, from Epic to Exalted.
Climbing from where you are
The ladder rewards two things: fixing what loses you games, and winning enough in a row for your MMR to catch up. A short champion pool and honest reviews of your losses do more than another fifty games on tilt. Our LoL coaching sessions are built for that review, with no one else touching your account.
FAQ
Is Iron 1 or 4 higher in LoL?
Iron I is higher. Divisions run IV, III, II, I, so the lower the number, the higher you are. At 100 LP in Iron I you move up to Bronze IV, and the same order holds in every tier up to Diamond.
Do League ranks go from 1 to 4 or 4 to 1?
From 4 to 1. You enter a tier at division IV and leave it from division I. Master, Grandmaster and Challenger have no divisions at all; they're ranked on LP.
What is the highest rank in League of Legends?
Challenger. You need at least 800 LP and more LP than the lowest Challenger player on your server, and only 300 places exist on the biggest servers.
Can I skip divisions in LoL?
Not under Riot's published rules. Each division promotes at 100 LP, with any extra LP carried into the next one. A high MMR gives you bigger gains, so you move through divisions faster, but you still pass through each one.
How many people are Challenger in League of Legends?
Each server has its own cap: 300 in NA, EUW, KR and SEA, 200 in Brazil, EUNE, LAN, LAS and Türkiye, and 50 in Japan, Oceania and Russia. A server can have fewer Challengers than its cap if not enough players reach 800 LP.
What rank is average in LoL?
Gold. In League of Graphs' August 2026 figures, 60% of ranked Solo/Duo players are Gold or higher and 36% are Platinum or higher, so the median player sits inside Gold. That counts ranked players only.
Is Emerald high elo?
It's above average: about 18% of ranked players are Emerald or higher. Most players keep the words high elo for Diamond and up, which is under 5% of the ladder.
Is Diamond 4 good in League?
Yes. Diamond and above is about 4.9% of ranked Solo/Duo players in the August 2026 figures, so reaching Diamond IV puts you in roughly the top 5%.
What rank is top 10 percent in LoL?
The top 10% line falls inside Emerald. Emerald and above is about 18% of players and Diamond and above about 4.9%, so a mid-Emerald player is close to the top 10%. The line moves through the year.
What rank is top 3% in League of Legends?
Somewhere inside Diamond. Diamond and above is about 4.9% of ranked players and Master and above under 1%, so the top 3% starts in the upper Diamond divisions.
Does ranked Flex affect Solo/Duo MMR?
No. Flex and Solo/Duo keep separate ranks and separate matchmaking ratings, so a bad night in Flex doesn't lower your Solo/Duo MMR.
Will my League of Legends rank reset in 2026?
It already has. The 2026 ranked year started on 8 January with a reset and five placement games. The reset lowers your visible rank but not your MMR to zero, so a strong player climbs back quickly.
Is a 55% win rate good in LoL?
Yes, if it's over a decent number of games. Across 100 games, 55% means you're beating players at your MMR more often than not, so you should be climbing. Across 20 games it tells you very little.
