League of Legends Duo Queue: Rules, Rank Limits and Who You Can Duo With

Duo queue lets two players enter Ranked Solo/Duo together, as long as their ranks sit within Riot's limits. Iron to Platinum is fairly loose. Diamond needs the two of you close together, Master has its own LP rules, and Grandmaster and Challenger can't duo at all. Hidden MMR can block a pair whose badges look fine.

What is LoL duo queue?

It's Ranked Solo/Duo with one friend in your party. The two of you play on the same team with three other players, and each of you wins or loses LP on your own account. Your ranks are never combined, and a party can't be bigger than two.

What a duo really adds is communication. Two players on voice can line up a gank, time a dragon or call a reset before the other three react. Games you play alone and games you play as a duo count towards the same Solo/Duo rank.

Who can duo with whom: the rank limits

Iron can duo up to Silver, Emerald up to Diamond III, and from Diamond the range shrinks to a few divisions. Master is limited by LP. Grandmaster and Challenger are solo only.

Both players have to fit each other's row, which is where most confusion comes from. Two common cases:

On the Korean server, players can't duo with Master or higher at all. Flex is looser: there are no Flex rank limits for Diamond and below, so a pair refused in Solo/Duo may still be able to play Flex together.

How hidden MMR blocks a duo

Two badges can match and the client can still refuse the pair. From Emerald up to Diamond II, you can't duo with a player who shows Diamond or lower but has a Master-tier MMR. Since patch 26.15 (28 July 2026), any account with Grandmaster or Challenger MMR is barred from duo too, whatever rank it shows. Master players competing for Grandmaster are also held to solo.

This catches accounts that have climbed fast. A Diamond IV account on a long win streak may have an MMR far above its badge, and the client judges the MMR.

Riot doesn't show MMR in the client, so you can only infer it from your LP gains. Our guide on how MMR works covers how to read them.

Does duo queue affect MMR and LP?

Yes, exactly as a solo game does. A duo win moves your MMR and LP, and so does a duo loss. There's no separate duo rating, and when you go back to queueing alone you carry the same record.

Riot's matchmaking page says teams are built so their average MMR is roughly equal, and that a duo with a big rank gap, such as Bronze IV with Silver I, makes a fair match harder to build. Riot hasn't published how it weights a premade's MMR, so be wary of any guide that quotes a formula.

Is duo queue harder than solo?

Not by rule. Whether a duo helps depends on how the two of you play together. A jungler and mid laner who talk through wave states before a river fight get real value from voice. Two players on opposite sides of the map get very little.

A bad duo shows the same signs every time:

One test after a session: would you have made the same decisions without voice chat? If the answer is yes in most games, the duo isn't adding much, and solo may suit you better.

How to find a LoL duo partner

Filter by server, rank and role before you look at anyone's win rate. Friends, your club and League Discord servers are the usual places to start.

  1. Check the rank limits. Make sure both badges fit the table above.
  2. Pick roles that meet. Jungle with mid or top, ADC with support.
  3. Agree on calls. Decide who calls objectives before the first game.
  4. Play a short trial. Three or four games tell you more than a profile.
  5. Watch the losses. How someone handles a lost lane matters more than their record.

A high win rate on its own tells you little. A player who wants early fights and one who wants to farm for 30 minutes will pull the game in two directions.

Best role pairs for duo queue

Jungle with mid and ADC with support are the safest starting points, because those roles meet over and over in a game.

PairStrengthWhat to coordinate
Jungle + MidMap controlGanks, river vision, first objectives
ADC + SupportShared laneTrades, wave state, all-ins
Jungle + TopSide-lane pressureGank timing, wave state, first turret
Jungle + SupportRoams and visionInvades, rotations, dragon setup

The pair only works if the champions back it up. A jungler who wants early fights needs a mid laner with lane priority; a mid laner stuck under tower can't follow. Our guide to the best duo pairs by role goes into champion combinations.

Duo queue and boosting: what Riot allows and what it punishes

Duo with an eligible friend is a normal part of ranked. Paying a much stronger player to carry you up is rank manipulation under Riot's rules. In its 17 September 2026 anti-boost update, Riot said players who repeatedly party with boosters or smurfs lose the rank they gained, even if they say they didn't know.

SituationRiot's position
Ranked with an eligible friend on their own accountAllowed
Practising together as a duoAllowed
Someone else logging into your account to climb itBanned (account sharing)
Repeatedly partying with a booster or smurfRank removed, even if you say you did not know
Paying a stronger player to duo with youAgainst the rules; penalties possible

We sell duo boosting on your own account, with a Challenger partner on every order. Playing on your own login lowers the risk but doesn't make it allowed. On our 2026 orders, Riot caught about 5 to 8% of duo orders, against 12 to 32% of solo orders where a booster logs in. The usual outcome was a 3-day suspension and the LP since detection removed. FAQ

Who can I duo with in League of Legends?

Anyone inside the range Riot sets for your tier. Gold duos with Silver to Platinum, Diamond IV to II with Emerald II to Diamond II, and Master only with Diamond I under 200 LP or Master within 400 LP. Grandmaster and Challenger can't duo.

Can Diamond 4 duo with Emerald 4?

No. Diamond IV can only queue with Emerald II and above, so an Emerald IV has to climb two divisions first. Read the Diamond player's row, not the Emerald one.

Can Emerald 3 duo with Diamond 4?

No. Emerald's own range reaches Diamond III, but Diamond IV needs its partner at Emerald II or higher. Both players have to fit each other's rules, and Emerald III misses by one division.

Can you duo queue in Master?

Yes, within limits set in patch 26.15. A Master player can duo with Diamond I if the Master player is under 200 LP, or with another Master within 400 LP. Master players competing for Grandmaster are blocked.

What rank can you no longer duo in LoL?

Grandmaster. From Grandmaster up, Solo/Duo is solo only, and since patch 26.15 the same applies to any account with Grandmaster or Challenger MMR, whatever rank it shows.

Is duo queue in League of Legends being removed?

No. Riot hasn't announced any plan to remove duo queue. Its 2026 changes, the latest in patch 26.15 (July 2026), narrowed who can duo at the top of the ladder.

Does duo queue affect MMR?

Yes, the same way a solo game does. Every Solo/Duo result moves your own MMR and LP. There's no separate duo rating, and your partner's rank never replaces yours.

Is duo queue harder than solo?

Not by any rule Riot has published. A duo with a big rank gap makes the lobby harder to balance, and a pair that doesn't talk gains little. A pair that plans ganks and objectives together usually does better than two solo players.

What is the best duo in League of Legends?

Jungle and Mid, or ADC and Support. Both pairs meet constantly during a game, so voice comms turn into kills and objectives. The right pair is the one whose champion pools fit the same plan.

How does duo queue work in League?

You invite one eligible player to a Ranked Solo/Duo lobby and queue together. You land on the same team with three other players, and each of you gains or loses LP on your own account.

Why am I restricted from playing ranked?

If you can't queue at all, it's usually a penalty or an unmet requirement (level 30, 20 champions, 10 normal games). If you can queue alone but not with one partner, it's the rank or MMR gap. The client message tells you which.
